Stay Close: Your Quick Guide to Building Connection in Marriage

By Dr. David M. Mabry

Most marriages don't fall apart in a single moment. They drift: one missed conversation, one unspoken hurt, one busy week at a time.

Over the past ten weeks, our team has explored how connection fades and how couples can rebuild it. This post brings the whole series together in one place. Read it in two minutes, pick one action, and start today.

1. Catch the Drift Early

  • Name the small gaps. Distance grows through overlooked conversations and missed moments. The good news: connection is rebuilt the same way, one intentional choice at a time.

  • Speak up before it stacks up. Unspoken needs and repeated disappointments quietly build resentment. Raise small issues early, honestly and kindly.

  • Take loneliness seriously. You can share a home and a calendar and still feel unknown by your spouse. If you feel lonely, say so. It's a signal, not a failure.

2. Turn Toward Each Other Every Day

Connection lives in ordinary moments, not grand gestures.

  • Notice the bids. "You won't believe what happened today" is an invitation. Put the phone down, look up, and turn toward your spouse.

  • Break the autopilot. Busy couples can manage schedules well while connection gets lost in the routine. Four simple practices (Push, Priorities, Purpose, and Passion) help bring it back.

  • Protect ten minutes a day. Check in with no phones and no agenda. Ask, "What was the best part of your day?" and really listen.

3. Keep Growing Together

Healthy couples stay curious about each other and intentional about where they're headed.

  • Share a purpose, not just a calendar. Coordinating schedules isn't the same as building a shared purpose. Talk about what you want your marriage to accomplish, then set one goal together.

  • Make room to breathe. Togetherness matters, but too much of a good thing can wear you down. Give each other space to rest and renew, then bring your best self back.

Your 7-Day Challenge

Pick one action from the list above. Tell your spouse which one you chose, then practice it every day for a week. At the end of the week, sit down together and talk about what changed.

Talk About It

  1. Which of these three areas feels strongest in our marriage right now? Which needs the most attention?

  1. When do you feel most connected to me? When do you feel most distant?

  1. What is one small habit we could start this week that would help us feel closer?

You Don't Have to Do This Alone
